Why Synthetic

Conventional oils vs Syntheticpistons

What’s the difference between conventional petroleum motor oils and synthetic motor oils?

Conventional petroleum oils are refined from crude oil, which is pumped from the earth. The refining process, however, does not remove many of the impurities inherent in the crude oil. These impurities detract from the lubricating ability of the oil and contribute to deposit, sludge and varnish formation. AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are constructed in the laboratory using an engineering process that removes impurities. They have uniform molecular structures and are designed for specific lubricating applications. They are not as easily affected by the high temperatures or demanding operating conditions of modern engines.

In other words:

Conventional oils have a lot of junk in them that is no benefit to your engine and can increase sludge buildup over time more easily than a synthetic oil will.  Synthetic oils are man made and have nothing in them that is not designed to benefit lubing and keeping your engine clean.  Synthetic blends are only halfway better so not even worth it you are better off choosing one or the other.

Sludge:

During normal engine operation there is a buildup of water vapors, fuel vapors, acids and fuel vapor inside the engine. These by-products of combustion are circulating through the motor oil. If the oil is changed at regular intervals, most of the sludge particles are drained away with the used oil.  If the oil is not changed regularly they can began to build up and become sludge.  This can clog oil passages and starve critical components of their lubrication greatly reducing engine life.

With the addition of variable valve timing (VVT) in engines for the last 15 or so years sludge has become a bigger problem yet.  It is even more critical to keep your engine clean because VVT systems are dependent on engine oil pressure to operate and keep them in time with the firing of the cylinders.  They have tiny passages that can become clogged very easily and if they are it often results in poor engine performance due to your valves not being correctly timed to where the manufacturer designed them to be.  Ford trucks have had huge problems with this in the past.

Now with the addition of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) manufacturers are able to get more horse power out of smaller engines by turbocharging them.  With the turbos comes a lot more heat which is very hard on oil.

The Answer:

AMSOIL synthetic motor oils provide extended drain performance because they resist breakdown better than conventional petroleum oils. AMSOIL motor oils are formulated to prevent the formation of performance-robbing deposits and resist volatilization (burn off), which alters viscosity and increases oil consumption. Finally, AMSOIL motor oils’ superior additive packages, a key element in the oils’ ability to function, hold up under engine stresses, remaining serviceable for the full recommended drain interval.
